The first convening in a series of virtual learning sessions on the new resource Mainstreaming SDG 16: Using the Voluntary National Review to Advance More Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societieshosted by the TAP Network and the Global Alliance, will focus on Practical Approaches for Mainstreaming SDG16. It will provide an opportunity for experts working on SDG16 to unpack some of the key challenges for mainstreaming SDG16 at the national and local levels, and will examine practical examples of how these challenges can be overcome. This workshop will include experts from government, civil society, the UN System and the private sector, as well as other key institutions critical to mainstreaming SDG16+ such as parliaments, supreme audit institutions, national statistical offices and more. It will be hosted in a Virtual Workshop format in an effort to provide a space for interactive discussion and sharing of experiences.

To encourage open sharing and learning amongst peers, this workshop will operate under Chatham House Rules.

Key Guiding Questions and Engagement:

To maximize engagement of participants in this workshop, we will provide ample opportunity for interactive discussion, as well as tools for interactive inputs throughout the session. This workshop will look to unpack insights around key questions, including but not limited to:

  • What are the biggest challenges that the SDG16 community faces when it comes to mainstreaming SDG16 into national programming and actions?
  • What are some positive examples of where governments, institutions and/or civil society stakeholders have successfully mainstreamed SDG16 into national programming and action? And what are some of the lessons learned from these examples?
  • What does the SDG16 Community need to do to further support countries in mainstreaming SDG16, including through the VNR processes or the SDG16 Thematic Reviews through the HLPF?
  • How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected the VNRs, and follow-up from these processes? How can governments and stakeholders ensure that SDG16 remains a priority in SDG implementation going forward?
