The World Data Forum brings together data leaders from national and international statistical systems, academia, business community and civil society, among other stakeholder groups, to foster exchange of ideas, showcase innovations, identify solutions, discuss future strategies, and provide mutual learning opportunities.

Both the virtual and in person versions of the third World Data Forum was organized around six thematic areas. The World Data Forum 2021 Bern UNWDF was hosted by Swiss Confederation and Federal Statistical Office of Switzerland, with support from the Statistics Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, under the guidance of the UN Statistical Commission and the High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for Statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The provisional programme structure and session titles can be found here. The programme was organized around six thematic areas:

  • New approaches to capacity development for better data;
  • Innovations and synergies across data ecosystems;
  • Leaving no one behind;
  • Understanding the world through data;
  • Building trust in data and statistics;
  • How far have we come?

The UNDP Oslo Governance Centre (OGC) participated in the 2021 UN World Data Forum to highlight the joint UNDP-UNODC-OHCHR SDG 16 Survey Initiative being piloted in eight countries as well as to spotlight the launch of the Praia group on Governance Statistics Task Teams on ‘Nondiscrimination and Equality’ and ‘Participation’.

The Forum was an opportunity to connect with the data community, learn about the latest innovations in the field and to identify areas of cooperation to strengthen data collection and reporting on SDG 16 and promote governance statistics.
