Description:

Building upon the 2022 Future of Global Governance Series Workshops held at the UN General Assembly Science Summit, the Center for Global Agenda (CGA) at Unbuilt Labs is excited to partner with the Global Consortium for Systems Research (GCSR) to present the 2023 Future of Global Governance Conference.

This year's conference is inspired by CGA Co-Director's forthcoming publication with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR): "Closing the Compliance Gap: System-wide Transformation Methods for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals", Prof. James Romberger's eco-fiction graphic novel Post York (Dark Horse, 2021; translation to Spanish, 2023) on New York flood scenarios, and GCSR’s 2023-2024 theme "Quantum Futures".

We are honored to have great presentations and speakers last year, including Jim Hall, FREng (Professor of Climate and Environmental Risks; Director of Research, School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford), Steve MacFeely (Director of Data and Analytics, World Health Organization (WHO)), Ivy Kwan Arce (Board Member, Treatment Action Group (TAG); Research in Action Award (RIAA) Honoree), and Rachele Hendricks-Sturrup, DHSc, MSc, MA (Research Director, Real World Evidence at Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy).

We are very much looking forward to hearing exciting and emerging perspectives this year as well.

We are open to all proposals relevant to the title of the conference and we are especially keen on proposals that take on a systems and/ or transdisciplinary perspective.

The Global Consortium for Systems Research (GCSR) is leading the collaborative peer review process for Closing the Compliance Gap: System-wide Transformation Methods for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, a publication at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) that is currently undergoing a Global Stakeholder Consultation Process at the Center for Global Agenda (CGA) at Unbuilt Labs. https://unbuiltlabs.com/cga

Because the aim of the collaborative peer review is to get the widest possible participation and broadest possible expertise, those who apply are generally accepted. Collaborative Peer Reviewers will be formally credited in the acknowledgements of the publication

Process Details:
1. Upon a successful application, you will receive a confidential manuscript during Q1 (January to March) of 2023. The manuscript will have up to 250-300 pages but you are welcome to review anywhere from 1 section (1000 words roughly) within a chapter where you have relevant expertise, to the full book.
2. Due to the urgency of the publication, the first round of feedback from each collaborative peer reviewer is expected within 2-4 weeks.
3. You will email your review to Marvin Cheung, the author of the publication and Chair of GCSR directly. It needs to include (a) which sections you have read and which sections you are reviewing, (b) your review and suggestions regarding logic, structure, style, and clarity - this can be anywhere from one sentence to a more substantial review, (c) confirm whether you would like to be formally recognized as a collaborative peer reviewer in the acknowledgements.
4. Marvin will respond to your feedback accordingly.

We would like to extend an invitation to submit an expert statement to "Closing the Compliance Gap: System-wide Transformation Methods for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals", a publication at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The Global Stakeholder Consultation Process hosted by the Center for Global Agenda (CGA) at Unbuilt Labs will close on the 20th of December 2022. 

The proposed framework is rooted in the theory and practice of global diplomacy: the set of methods, principles, and actions to achieve the common interests of the global community. The framework recommends directing funds and efforts towards four major areas including Area 1: Cultural Diplomacy, Area 2: Science Diplomacy, Area 3: Preventive Diplomacy, and Area 4: Disaster Diplomacy, as well as five methods within each area.

Presentation of draft framework under Global Stakeholder Consultation Process at the Center for Global Agenda (CGA) during the UN General Assembly Science Summit

The Center for Global Agenda thanks the CEO of The Millennium Project for his expert statement

The Center for Global Agenda (CGA) at Unbuilt Labs is leading the global stakeholder consultation for the Recommended UN Action Plan to Close the Compliance Gap, a publication at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). Action Plan CCG will recommend directing impact investment funds and efforts towards four areas of diplomacy and five themes within each of the areas.

We would like to thank Jerome Glenn, Co-Founder and CEO of The Millennium Project for his expert statement on Area 4: Disaster Diplomacy, Theme 16: Strategic Foresight. Marvin Cheung, Co-Director of CGA, also expresses his thanks, "I am pleased to have been a signatory to the Open Letter to the UN Secretary-General to conduct a feasibility study for a UN Office on Strategic or Existential Threats, co-authored by The Millennium Project, and to continue supporting research on strategic foresight. Glenn, who has been meeting with Ayaka Suzuki, Director of the Strategic Planning and Monitoring Unit in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG) under the recommendation of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, presents a valuable perspective to the Recommended UN Action Plan to Close the Compliance Gap. His statement on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) complements on-going deliberations on strategic threats, including advanced global warming, solar radiation, malicious nanotechnology, nuclear incidents, pandemics, and other high-risk events that pose a severe challenge to shared peace and prosperity for all."

From the statement: "Current work on AI governance is designed to catch up with the artificial narrow intelligence proliferating worldwide today. Meanwhile, investment into AGI development is forecast to be $50 billion by 2023. Expert judgments about when AGI will be possible vary. Some working to develop AGI believe it is possible to have AGI in as soon as ten years. It is likely to take ten years to: 1) develop ANI to AGI international or global agreements; 2) design the governance system; and 3) begin implementation. Hence, it would be wise to begin exploring potential governance approaches and their potential effectiveness now. We need to jump ahead to anticipate governance requirements for what AGI could become. Beginning now to explore and assess rules for governance of AGI will not stifle its development, since such rules would not be in place for at least ten years. (Consider how long it is taking to create a global governance system for climate change.)"
