According to the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), many African countries are becoming world leaders in measuring and reporting progress on governance, putting them among the most innovative and committed in such task.

African countries are demonstrating that the 12 targets comprising SDG 16 are measurable, and that national statistics offices (NSOs) can produce good data based on citizens’ experiences rather than international governance indicators. They are doing so by inviting civil society groups to cooperate with NSOs, “translating” SDG 16’s global indicators into simplified local statistics.
